"Tony Crane did really well for 70 minutes. He could not have done much more. I am very pleased with him.

"I had to juggle things around when Terrell Forbes rang in with an illness at 6.15am.

"There was the odd error late on but that was to be expected.

"Nick Hegarty came on and he did well too."

And the Town gaffer was also impressed with Downey, who arrived on a free from Slade's former club Scarborough in the summer.

The Newcastle-born defender came on for the last 15 minutes.

Slade said: "Glen has had a horrible season.

"He had an awful injury but came on and did very well. There were several pleasing aspects to the game and that was one of them."

The Town manager was also pleased to watch his side hit the back of the net four times after a recent bout of goal-shyness.

"To score four goals is always a great result," he said.

"Some of the goals would have graced any ground in the country.

"Michael Reddy's second one was phenomenal.

"We had a frontman who was completely on fire. Reddy scored two, could have scored three, and he was the difference.

"I was happy with the overall performance. We looked resilient and scored goals.

"We want to finish in front of our own fans with a win against Southend now."
